6 Months Baby: Development, Feeding and Sleep
Around six months, many babies sit with support, reach and rake for toys and babble in strings of sounds. This is the age most babies show readiness for their first solid foods, alongside continued milk feeds.
These guides describe common developmental patterns, not deadlines. Every baby develops at their own pace.

What this month looks like
Development
Sitting with support, transferring toys and turning toward sounds and names are common. Babbling often becomes more varied.
Feeding
Many babies are ready to start solids around now — sitting supported, good head control and interest in food are signs. Milk feeds continue alongside first tastes.
Sleep
Some babies settle into clearer day–night patterns; others don't yet, and both are normal. Teething can temporarily disrupt sleep.
Play
Simple cause-and-effect toys, soft blocks and gentle games support this stage. Sitting play with support opens up new exploration.
Safety
Introduce solids seated and supervised, and learn the difference between gagging and choking. Keep small, round or hard foods off the menu.
Medical guidance
A six-month check and vaccinations usually fall around now. Discuss first foods, iron-rich options and any allergy concerns with your paediatrician.
