5 Months Baby: Development, Feeding and Sleep

Around five months, many babies are absorbed in their hands, grasping toys and rolling in one or both directions. Sitting with support may be developing. Sleep patterns may continue changing as your baby becomes more alert, mobile and aware of their surroundings.

These guides describe common developmental patterns, not deadlines. Every baby develops at their own pace.

Five-month-old baby playing with hands — ParentVibes 5-month overview

What this month looks like

Development

Rolling both ways for some babies, reaching accurately and passing toys between hands are common. Many babies enjoy experimenting with sounds.

Feeding

Milk is still the main source of nutrition. Many families begin preparing for solids, which most babies are ready for around six months.

Sleep

Sleep can stay unsettled for a while at this age. Gentle, consistent wind-downs may help; there is no single approach that suits every family.

Play

Offer toys of different shapes and textures to explore. Supported sitting with cushions nearby lets your baby see more of the world.

Safety

With more rolling and reaching, sweep the floor for small items and keep hot drinks well away. Lower the cot base if you haven't already.

Medical guidance

Raise any feeding or development questions at routine visits. Speak with your doctor before introducing solids and about allergy-safe first foods.
