4 Months Baby: Development, Feeding and Sleep

Around four months, many babies grab and mouth toys, push up during tummy time and may start rolling. Laughter and lively babble are common. Some families notice sleep becoming lighter for a while as awareness grows.

These guides describe common developmental patterns, not deadlines. Every baby develops at their own pace.

Four-month-old baby reaching for a toy — ParentVibes 4-month overview

What this month looks like

Development

Rolling attempts (often tummy to back first), reaching with both hands and bringing objects to the mouth are common. Many babies laugh and babble more.

Feeding

Milk remains the main nutrition. If your baby seems interested in food, discuss readiness signs with your paediatrician rather than starting solids by the calendar.

Sleep

Sleep may become lighter or more broken for a stretch as your baby becomes more alert. This is common and usually settles with time.

Play

Toys that rattle, crinkle or have different textures are engaging. Mirrors and gentle peek-a-boo support social play.

Safety

Once rolling starts, never leave your baby on a raised surface. Keep the sleep space free of soft items and check toys for loose parts.

Medical guidance

A check-up and vaccinations often fall around now. Talk to your doctor before starting solids and about any concerns with rolling or head control.
