12 Months Baby: Development, Feeding and Sleep
Around twelve months, your baby reaches their first birthday. Many are standing, cruising or taking early steps, and some use one or two words with meaning — but the range is wide and both earlier and later are normal. This is a lovely moment to look back at how far you've both come.
These guides describe common developmental patterns, not deadlines. Every baby develops at their own pace.

What this month looks like
Development
Standing, cruising and early steps are common; independent walking spreads across many months either side of the first birthday. Gestures and first words develop for many babies.
Feeding
Many babies move toward family foods and a cup around now. Discuss the move from formula and any dietary questions with your paediatrician.
Sleep
Sleep needs slowly shift toward toddler patterns, often with a move toward fewer naps over the coming months.
Play
Simple pretend play, stacking and picture books support this stage. Copying everyday actions is common and fun to encourage.
Safety
Walking and climbing bring new hazards — re-check babyproofing, secure furniture and keep an eye on stairs, windows and hot surfaces.
Medical guidance
The one-year check and vaccinations usually fall around now. It's a good time to discuss development, feeding and the year ahead with your doctor.
