8 Months Baby: Development, Feeding and Sleep

Around eight months, many babies are on the move and starting to pick up smaller objects between finger and thumb. Separation anxiety may appear now, which can be tiring but is a normal and healthy part of development.

These guides describe common developmental patterns, not deadlines. Every baby develops at their own pace.

What this month looks like

Development

Crawling or shuffling, early pincer grasp and passing toys hand to hand are common. Many babies respond to their name and enjoy peek-a-boo.

Feeding

Self-feeding with soft finger foods often grows. Expect mess — it's part of learning. Milk feeds continue alongside meals.

Sleep

Separation anxiety can affect settling and night waking for a while. Extra reassurance and a predictable routine may help.

Play

Hide-and-find games, board books and simple stacking toys suit this age and support object permanence.

Safety

With crawling comes new reach — check floor level for small items, secure heavy furniture to the wall and use stair gates.

Medical guidance

Discuss any concerns about mobility, feeding or hearing at check-ups. Separation anxiety is normal; raise it only if it feels extreme or unusual.
