Overview

What is PMMVY?

Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is the Government of India's flagship cash maternity benefit. It partly compensates pregnant and lactating women for the wages they lose around childbirth and encourages them to rest, eat well, and seek antenatal care.

Under the revamped PMMVY 2.0 (run under Mission Shakti), a mother receives ₹5,000 for her first living child, paid in two instalments. If a second child is a girl, an additional ₹6,000 is paid in a single instalment — an incentive to welcome and value the girl child. That is up to ₹11,000 in total across the two.

The National Food Security Act guarantees pregnant women a maternity benefit of at least ₹6,000; PMMVY's ₹5,000 for the first child is topped up by the ₹1,000 institutional-delivery incentive under Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), so the two schemes work together.

Ways to apply

  • Online — PMMVY 2.0 citizen portal (pmmvy.wcd.gov.in)
  • At your Anganwadi Centre (AWC)
  • Through an approved health facility / ASHA worker
  1. Register early

    As early as possible

Register your pregnancy as soon as possible at your local Anganwadi Centre (AWC) or approved health facility — or yourself through the PMMVY 2.0 citizen portal.

  2. Submit Form 1-A with your documents

    1st instalment

Complete the registration form with your Aadhaar, bank details and MCP-card information, and keep your ANC records handy. This releases the first instalment.

  3. Claim after the birth (Form 1-B)

    2nd instalment

Avoid these

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Registering late — you must register the pregnancy within 6 months of your LMP to claim the first instalment.
  • Using a bank account that isn't linked to your Aadhaar — the DBT payment will fail.
  • Assuming any second child qualifies — the ₹6,000 second-child benefit is only for a girl.
  • Not completing your baby's first immunisation cycle — the second instalment is released only after it's done.
  • Name mismatches between your Aadhaar, bank account and MCP card — get them corrected before applying.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

Can I get PMMVY for my second child?

Only if your second child is a girl. In that case you receive an additional ₹6,000 in a single instalment after the birth and early immunisation. There is no cash benefit for a second child who is a boy.

How is PMMVY different from Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY)?

PMMVY is a cash maternity benefit from the Ministry of Women & Child Development and is not tied to where you deliver. JSY is a Health Ministry incentive that rewards delivering in a hospital. They are separate schemes and you can receive both.

Do I need an Aadhaar card and bank account?

Yes. PMMVY is paid by Direct Benefit Transfer, so you need an Aadhaar-linked bank or post-office account in your own name. Link your Aadhaar to your account before you apply.

I am a government employee — can I apply?

No. Women in regular government/PSU employment, or those already receiving a similar paid maternity benefit under another law (such as the Maternity Benefit Act or ESI), are not eligible for PMMVY.

How long does the money take to arrive?

It varies by state and how quickly your documents are verified. Register early, keep your bank and Aadhaar details consistent, and follow up through your Anganwadi Centre or the portal if a payment is delayed.
