Overview

What is JSY?

Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) is a safe-motherhood scheme under the National Health Mission. It pays a cash incentive to encourage pregnant women to give birth in a hospital rather than at home, which sharply lowers the risk to both mother and baby.

States are grouped into Low Performing States (LPS) — the EAG states plus Assam and Jammu & Kashmir — and High Performing States (HPS). The cash amount depends on that grouping and on whether you live in a rural or urban area.

A community health worker (ASHA) who helps you access antenatal care and deliver in a facility also receives a small incentive, so she is motivated to support you through the process.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Not registering during pregnancy — register early with your ASHA or ANM.
  • Delivering at a private hospital that isn't accredited — only government or accredited private facilities qualify.
  • Not carrying your JSY/MCP card and ID to the hospital.
  • Assuming the amount is the same everywhere — it varies by state category and rural/urban location.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

What are LPS and HPS states?

JSY classifies states as Low Performing States (LPS) or High Performing States (HPS), which decides the cash amount. LPS are the EAG states — Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Rajasthan — plus Assam and Jammu & Kashmir. All other states are HPS.

Can I claim JSY and PMMVY together?

Yes. JSY (a Health Ministry incentive for hospital delivery) and PMMVY (a Women & Child Development cash maternity benefit) are separate schemes, and you can receive both if you're eligible.

Is the delivery itself free?

Delivery at a public health facility is free under the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK). JSY is an additional cash incentive paid on top of that free care.

What if I have a home delivery?

JSY's aim is to encourage hospital delivery. A small cash assistance (around ₹500) has historically been available for BPL women aged 19+ who deliver at home, up to two births — check what applies in your state with your ASHA.
