IVF Insurance in India: Is Fertility Treatment Covered?

By ParentVibes Editorial Team6 min readPublished Jul 7, 2026

Health insurance and IVF have a complicated relationship in India. Historically, many standard health policies excluded infertility and assisted-reproduction treatment altogether. The landscape is slowly evolving, but coverage remains limited and highly dependent on your specific policy wording — so the details matter.

Why IVF is often excluded

Insurers have traditionally treated fertility treatment as a planned, elective expense rather than an emergency or illness, and many base policies list infertility treatment among their exclusions. That means the cost of a cycle typically falls on you unless a policy specifically says otherwise.

Where coverage may be improving

  • Some employer group health plans now add fertility or maternity-plus benefits — check yours
  • A few newer or premium policies and riders offer limited fertility cover, often with sub-limits and waiting periods
  • Associated costs (such as hospitalisation for a related complication) may be treated differently from the IVF procedure itself

Because products and rules change, and because the insurance regulator (IRDAI) periodically updates guidance on exclusions and disclosures, don't rely on general articles — including this one — for a coverage decision. Read your policy document and confirm in writing.

Questions to ask your insurer

  • Is IVF/IUI or any assisted-reproduction treatment covered — and under what conditions?
  • Are there sub-limits, waiting periods, or age/cycle caps?
  • Is medication covered, or only the procedure?
  • Does my employer group plan add anything my individual policy doesn't?

Whatever your cover, it helps to know the real numbers: see typical IVF costs by city, use the cost estimator, and read about IVF financing options if you'll be paying out of pocket.
