Hidden IVF Costs: What Clinic Quotes Often Leave Out
Most IVF sticker shock comes not from the base package but from everything around it. A quote of 'X lakh per cycle' can quietly exclude medication, lab add-ons, freezing, storage, and — the big one — the possibility of a second or third attempt. Knowing what's often left out lets you compare quotes honestly and avoid nasty surprises.
Our IVF cost by city guide and cost estimator break costs into the same line items clinics use, so you can see what a package should contain.
Common costs left out of the headline price
- Medications — often ₹35,000–₹60,000 or more, and highly dependent on your dose and response
- ICSI — injecting a single sperm into each egg, frequently advised for male-factor cases
- PGT — genetic testing of embryos, which can add ₹80,000–₹1.5 lakh
- Embryo freezing (vitrification) and annual storage fees
- Frozen embryo transfer (FET) — a separate procedure with its own charge
- Donor eggs or sperm, where needed
The biggest hidden cost: repeat cycles
Many people need more than one cycle. Because cumulative success rises across attempts, a realistic budget assumes the possibility of a second — sometimes third — cycle. A clinic quoting only the first cycle can look cheaper while costing more overall. Ask specifically what a repeat cycle would cost, and whether any frozen embryos from the first cycle reduce it.
Costs beyond the clinic
Budget also for travel and time off work for frequent monitoring scans, especially if you're travelling to a larger city for treatment. If you live in a smaller town, compare the total — including travel and stay — against a nearby metro.
How to get a true all-in estimate
- Ask for a written, itemised quote for one full cycle, listing what is and isn't included
- Ask what a repeat cycle costs, and what happens if a cycle is cancelled midway
- Ask whether medication is billed separately, and get a likely range for your protocol
- Confirm freezing and per-year storage charges up front
Once treatment starts, keep every bill in one place with the IVF tracker, and compare quotes against typical ranges in your city using the city cost guide.
