The sock was on her foot. It had been the whole time.

3:04am. A wail. I stumble in. The crisis: one sock is missing. This is, apparently, the worst thing that has ever happened.

We search. We negotiate. I offer a different sock. This is rejected with the fury of a tiny monarch.
